SMELSER — Two people died in a shooting incident Saturday afternoon.

Grant County 911 received a call reporting two people with gunshot wounds outside a residence on Rose Lane Saturday at 1:28 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find the body of Katie R. Kieffer, 35, and Ben Randecker, 40, rural Cuba City, outside the residence near the vehicle.

First aid was given to Randecker before he was transported to Southwest Health in Platteville. He was then transferred by ambulance to a Madison hospital. Randecker died as a result of his injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning that Randecker and Kieffer were in a relationship and had a child, but that relationship recently ended.

Randecker was arrested Aug. 14 on charges of felony stalking, misdemeanor battery — domestic abuse, disorderly conduct — domestic abuse and criminal damage to property after an incident in Darlington, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Randecker was to make his first court appearance Monday. He was free on $350 cash bond, according to court records.

Kieffer went to the Rose Lane address to drop off their child Saturday afternoon. The Sheriff’s Office said when she got out of her car, Randecker shot her with a handgun and then shot himself.

The investigation is continuing.
