MONONA — The Monroe Cheesemakers smashed the Monona Grove Silver Eagles 18-1 in five innings in nonconference softball action to close the regular season on Thursday, May 21.
After scoring a run in the first inning, the Cheesemakers unloaded with five runs on five hits in the second inning and six runs on five hits in third inning. Shortstop Jayde Hawkinson went 3x4 with a double, two RBIs and scored four times. Right fielder Maddie Ruegsegger was 4x5 with an RBI and scored three runs. Second baseman Jade Tran got two hits and drove in two runs.
Kaegann Paulson had a double and drove in five runs and pitched a complete game with just one unearned run allowed, three hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
The Cheesemakers (17-9) are the No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 2 playoffs and were to host No. 7 seed Sauk Prairie in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26. The winner advances to the regional championship on Thursday, May 28.
Waunakee 4, Brodhead 1
WAUNAKEE — The Waunakee Warriors snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning by scoring three runs to defeat the Brodhead Cardinals 4-1 in the final game of the regular season on Thursday May 21.
The Cardinals got 10 hits, but their high-powered offense produced just one run. Shortstop Elise Rear got two hits, including a double, and drove in the Cardinals only run in the first inning. Catcher Karli Krumwiede and 2B Keegan Steinke also had two hits for the Cardinals.
Mady Henning pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits. Henning walked none and fanned five.
Brodhead (15-5-1, 10-4) finished in second place in the RVC-Rock and is a No. 5 seed in the WIAA Division 2 playoffs. The Cardinals will travel to No. 4 seed Jefferson for a regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26 with the winner advancing to the regional championship on Thursday, May 28.
Argyle-Black Hawk 3, Cuba City 2
ARGYLE — It didn’t look good at the outset, but the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles came from behind to beat the Cuba City Cubans 3-2 in nonconference softball at Argyle on Thursday, May 21.
Cuba City got to ABH starting pitcher Brynn Harris for two runs in the first inning on a base hit and an error. But the Orioles got a run back in the third inning when Harris was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Kylie Butler to score.
The Orioles took the lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Brianna Wilhelmson tripled and Butler drove her in with an RBI single. Butler then stole second and stole third. She scored on an RBI ground out by 1B Claire Holmes. Harris sealed the win by setting down the last six batters in order to close a 3-2 win by Argyle-Black Hawk.
Harris pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run on six hits. She walked one and struck out four. Butler went 1x3 with an RBI and scored two of the Orioles’ three runs.
The win helped ABH even their record to 13-13 to close the regular season. The Orioles are a No. 6 seed in the Division 5 playoffs and traveled to No. 3 seed Wauzeka-Steuben for a regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
Evansville 7, Juda-Albany 2
JUDA — The Evansville Blue Devils sent the Juda-Albany Panthers to their third straight loss, 7-2 in nonconference action at Juda on Thursday, May 21.
The Blue Devils collected 12 hits and took a 7-0 lead before Jubany could get on the board in the sixth inning.
Left fielder Emerson Briggs got a hit and an RBI and 2B Anna Bartels got a hit and scored a run for the Panthers. Designated hitter Aubrey McCullough got two hits to lead Jubany.
Juda-Albany (15-8-1) are the No. 1 seed in the WIAA Division 5 playoffs and were to host No. 9 seed Palmyra-Eagle in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
