Make Valentine’s Day special with local gifts

Despite the cold weather that has made it feel like a full winter already, the first six weeks of 2022 have zoomed by … perhaps more so than usual. It’s now the weekend before Valentine’s Day. And, if it’s like everything else so far this year, it’s snuck up quickly!

Perhaps you’ve already made plans. Perhaps you don’t think there is a reason to make plans. But whether you’re treating a spouse, your children, or yourself, there is plenty to take advantage of this weekend or in the coming week(s) if you are celebrating late or just looking for an excuse for a pick-me-up or two.

Because of the first rushed part of this year, or even the opposite has been true for you, there is nothing quite like getting on your feet and taking your valentine on a little getaway to downtown. Think a day-date filled with cozy window seats. Perhaps with a view of the courthouse and the workers that are hard at work. Or a seat a block or two away with hot drinks. And whether you get in a few extra steps to check out the new businesses that have opened or just the new window displays, an afternoon meandering can quickly lead to amazing dinners.

If you prefer to stay inside, getting crafty with your partner is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday. Do-it-yourself (DIY) kits can be found at several shops downtown. In fact, with plenty of customizable and mini kits to choose from, you’ll end the night with something new for your home. Kits, crafts, toys, even Valentine’s Day gnomes can be found at 213 Mercantile, Edelweiss Gifts & More, and Toy Haus. In fact, 213 Mercantile’s newly expanded garland bar features double the colors it previously had and a whole new variety of shapes. It’s perfect for valentine’s day with the kids. You can also create and personalize a picture frame, door handle tassels, string art, or drinking glasses.

If you are looking to get creative in a slightly different way, become your own bartender. I am a little obsessed with the all-natural cocktail mixers at Artful Gourmet. Conveniently, Minhas Distillery has artisan spirits and liquors. Or grab a growler at Bullquarian Brewhouse. At Artful Gourmet you will also find hot cocoa bombs, pizza pans, charcuterie boards, and cooking stones. All items are perfect for a special night at home. Same goes for the dip mixes at House to Home Designs. There are too many to list, but chocolate fondue is a great pick for Valentine’s Day.

Another great option is to explore and learn about the wonderful history of downtown from the couch. Cozy up under a blanket and spend a night with a virtual tour of places like the Monroe Arts Center, Jailhouse Tap, Suisse Haus, and Rainbow Confections. All videos are narrated and short and sweet. You can find them at mainstreetmonroe.org/virtualtour.

Also from the couch, you can shop Zodica Perfumery’s online store. Owner, Kristi Moe, was recently recognized on Forbes’ Next 1000 list thanks to her complete line of perfume based on the zodiac signs. All products are made right on the south side of the square. A favorite, I’m told, is to wear your significant other’s sign.

The other Valentine’s Day standouts in town are, of course, Busy Bee Floral & Gift. This year, they’re offering two sizes of floral arrangements. You can select from Rich Love, Wild Child, and Blushing Romance. They have extended hours this weekend and will be open Monday. Plus, they deliver! Chocolate Temptation is offering heart shaped boxes in both ½ and 1 lb boxes. Rainbow Confections has at least 30 flavors of fudge and seasonal popcorn, which is how I’ll be treating myself. Luecke’s Diamond Center, which celebrated 100 years this past December has 25% off storewide. Complimentary gift wrap is available on all purchases and a free gift is included with $150 purchases.

So, no matter how you recognize Valentine’s Day or whom this year, we hope you will check out the many options – all in our downtown – and that they bring a smile to your face.
