REEDSBURG - The Monroe wrestling team had two wrestlers go unbeaten at the Reedsburg Duals Saturday.
Both sophomore Cole Murray at 126 pounds and junior Traiten Gorr (220) went 5-0. Gorr posted three pins and won two matches by forfeit. Murray had one pin and in one of the matches of the day, he defeated La Crosse Logan's Jaren Poff 6-5. He scored on a reversal with 3 seconds to go to seal the win. He also pulled off a 3-1 overtime win against Reedsburg. Murray scored on a penalty point and had an escape to clinch the win.
"He (Murray) has really taken a step forward as a sophomore," Monroe coach Tom Witt said of Murray.
Monroe finished 0-5 in the dual tournament. Reedsburg knocked off Monroe 56-21 and Westfield beat the Cheesemakers 52-24. La Crosse Logan defeated Monroe 46-21 and Oregon avenged a season-opening loss to Monroe beating the Cheesemakers 39-25. Westby edged the Cheesemakers 39-36.
Monroe sophomore Hayden Arneson (182) finished 4-1 in the tournament with three pins. The only loss for Arneson came to Westby 2-0.
"Hayden Arneson wrestled really well," Witt said. "He was just about to turn the kid and he just ran out of time."
In the first match against Reedsburg, in addition to Murray's win in overtime, Arneson and Gorr won by pins. Monroe freshman Dempzy Foley (145) won a match by forfeit.
"He (Gorr) has a lot of experience," Witt said. "He has got a lot better on his feet and is better conditioning wise."
Monroe freshman Travis Wolf (132) had a pin against Westfield. He was one of four Cheesemaker wrestlers to post a pin. The other wrestlers who had pins included Arneson, Gorr and Murray.
Monroe sophomore Isaac Wild (170) earned a pin in a match against La Crosse Logan. Gorr had a pin and Arneson won by forfeit.
The Cheesemakers lost to Badger South Conference rival Oregon after beating the Panthers in a thrilling season opener 33-31 Friday. Foley won a nail-biter 7-6. Arneson and sophomore heavyweight Kyle Walter won by pins. Gorr won by a forfeit and Murray posted a 9-1 win. Junior teammate Jared Amacher (152) lost a tight match 3-1 and freshman Joe Hughes (195) suffered a concussion and didn't continue wrestling.
"We are both close and young teams," Witt said. "They won the close matches."
Amacher came back to win his first match of the season 8-5 against Westfield. After taking a shot to the face, Amacher didn't back down.
"He toughed it out and battled," Witt said.
Murray and Foley won by pins. Wild pulled out a 5-1 win, while Gorr and Walter won by forfeits.
"Kyle took a step forward being more physical," Witt said.
Witt said if Hughes, as well as freshman Sam Kind (113), and junior McKenzy Foley would have been healthy, the Cheesemakers could have beat Westby.
Monroe (1-5, 1-0 Badger South) will now gear up for a conference dual at Stoughton Friday.
"It's a huge challenge especially since we are giving up 18 points," Witt said. "Our goal is to battle and go six minutes."
