Monroe wins Summer Slugfest 14U tourney

MONROE - The Monroe 14U Softball Team won the Monroe Fasptich Summer Slugfest, which was held July 10 and 11 at Twining Park.

The Verona Cougars, Darien Fuzion, Rockford Mean Machine, CPC Fire (Ill.), South Central Wisconsin Phoenix, Stateline Starz and Beach Park Thunder (Ill.) participated in the event.

After going 2-1 in pool play July 10, Monroe began July 11 by beating the Verona Cougars 14-4 in the quarterfinals. Monroe's Kayla Updike went 2-for-3 and Taylor O'Leksy had a double.

In the semifinals, Monroe took on CPC Fire, which has qualified for the USAAA World Series in Kansas City, Mo. Monroe won 7-0. Monroe's Chandra McGuire had two doubles, Kari Jordan had two RBI, Taylor Barrett hit a double, and Ellie Grossen collected two hits.

In the championship game, Monroe faced the Beach Park Thunder who had beaten the team 3-1 in pool play on Saturday. Monroe defeated Beach Park 8-3 behind the pitching of Becca Armstrong, who had seven strikeouts and only two walks in seven innings. Monroe's current record is 28-7.
