STOUGHTON - Monroe's girls swimming team lost a heartbreaker to Stoughton in Badger South action Tuesday, 86-84.
"The score was as close throughout a majority of the meet as it was at the end," head coach Linda Moser said. "We had some great swims within that score and we had some disappointing times mixed in there, too."
The Cheesemakers have been battling injuries and illness over the past week, but Moser said the team didn't allow any of those situations to become excuses for not performing in the water.
"They're true competitors. (Wednesday) we'll hit practice hard knowing what we have to do in order to keep moving forward," Moser said.
Sara Heitkamp dropped her 500 time (6 minutes, 6.81 seconds, second place) by 11 seconds and was a key part in the 400 freestyle relay team that took second place. Heitkamp's time of 1:00.92 for her leg of the relay was outstanding, Moser said.
Kylee Ritschard swam in her first meet of the season after recovering from surgery and fared well in the 200 individual medley (2:35.17, third place), 100 backstroke (1:11.76, third place), and in the 200 freestyle relay (1:59.02, third place) and 400 free relay (4:22.61, second place).
Leanna Schwartzlow swam well in both of her individual races, the 100 breaststroke (1:13.94, first place) and the 50 freestyle (27.54, first place).
"(Schwartzlow) swam her best time of the season in the 100 breast. She also swam a 26.67 split in her leg of the 200 freestyle relay team," Moser said.
Monroe got a first-place finish from the 200 medley relay team of Randi Robertson, Kendell Niffeneger, Veronica Andraski and Schwartzlow with a time of 2:04.90. Robertson took second in the 200 freestyle (2:16.41) minutes later, captured second in the 100 backstroke (1:08.38) and was part of the first-place 200 freestyle relay team.
Niffeneger also swam on the 200 freestyle relay team and finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:10.28). Andraski also was on the first place 200 relay team and finished second overall individually in the 200 IM (2:34.10) and 100 freestyle (1:02.29).
The junior-varsity team won 88-39.
Monroe next swims at home Tuesday, Oct. 7, against Madison Edgewood.
