Optimism high for Cheesemakers

EAST TROY/MUKWONAGO — The Cheesemakers opened their girls tennis season with a flurry of matches last week. On Aug. 16 at the East Troy Quad, Monroe got it started with a 5-2 win over Whitewater, despite missing multiple varsity players for various reasons.

“We took care of business and played pretty well for being short-handed,” coach Matt Bordner said of facing a young Whitewater team. “It was nice to see what we have with some of our newer players. Lindsey Leuzinger, Kate Kundert, and Taylor Jacobson all got their first taste of varsity action today. I think all 3 have high ceilings in terms of their tennis abilities and should see a lot of growth this season.”

The victory celebration was short lived, however, as East Troy and Union Grove both swept the Cheesemakers. At the end of the week, Monroe lost to Waukesha West and host Mukwonago by a score of 6-1 in both duals.

“Our lineup as a whole will certainly look different a few weeks from now as we get back to full strength,” Bordner said.

In the win over Whitewater, Monroe received wins at No. 3 and 4 singles as well as all three doubles matches. Alicia Brunton won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1. Her sister Bella Brunton scored a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 doubles. Melena Brunton teamed with Bre Giasson at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Morgan Johnson and Kundert won 6-1, 6-2, and Leuzinger and Jacobson teamed up to win 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.

“Our doubles teams all won pretty handily against Whitewater,” Bordner said. “I think this match was a solid start for us and showed we have some depth at the bottom half of our lineup which is super nice to lean back on.”

Bordner said East Troy his squad as “pretty much overpowered the entire way” against East Troy. “[It] was a nice eye-opener for us after the Whitewater match, and I think it gives us a gauge of where we are at and where we want to be.”

Monroe scored just two game wins all day, as Johnson and Kundert took one in the second set at No. 2 doubles, and Leuzinger and Jacobson stole won in the first set at No. 3 doubles. All other matches finished 6-0, 6-0.

By the time the Cheesemakers left the courts, they had been swept by Union Grove as well.

“I’m not convinced we played our best tennis in these matches. I think we showed some promise and some good things, but the little things just started to pile up in some of our matches. I think our singles players need to just keep working on those approach balls and knowing when to attack the net, while our doubles players need to keep working on their movement and finishing at the net,” Bordner said. “Union Grove had a very solid team. We saw a great match from Bella at No. 4 who fought her way into a match tiebreaker. She took an early lead in it but her opponent just found a way to string together more points.” Bella Brunton lost 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.

At Mukwonago on Aug. 21, Monroe’s lone win came at No. 1 singles, as Kylie Miller knocked off Brooke Rydeski 6-4, 6-2. Alicia Brunton nearly pulled her No. 3 singles match into a tiebreak, but wound up losing 6-1, 6-4.

“Kylie battled and picked up her first win of the year at No. 1 singles against a very talented Mukwonago No. 1 player. Her opponent struggled with some double faults, and Kylie did a great job of taking momentum and playing just really tough tennis. I think her consistency was huge and she just really started to find a nice rhythm all day,” Bordner said. “Alicia fought into a really nice second set in her match. Alicia just has such a great attitude about playing singles, and really just focuses on one game at a time. She never gets too high or too low, and I think that always allows her to stay in matches. She doesn’t do anything fancy, but again her consistency is her strongest asset and she just tries to find ways to keep the ball in play while also putting some pressure on at the net in some good spots. She didn’t pick up a win, but I think it’s a match where Alicia definitely improved and will be great for her confidence moving ahead.”

Against Waukesha in Mukwonago, Johnson and Melena Brunton came through with a win at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 16-14.
