Less than a month after being arrested for OWI, Darlington Police Chief is out of a job.
The Darlington Special Police Committee held a hearing regarding Conway on Tuesday, July 14, and ultimately terminated Conway’s employment with the city, effective immediately. He had served as chief since March 5, 2024.
Darlington Mayor Dave Roelli wrote in a press release that the decision was made “after careful consideration” by the committee.
“Out of respect for all parties involved, no additional details will be released,” Roelli added. “The City of Darlington wants to reassure residents that maintaining public safety, trust, and continuity of service remains our highest priority. The department continues to operate as normal, and dedicated officers and staff remain committed to serving the community with professionalism and care.”
Conway, 48, was arrested June 19 in Monroe after crashing his vehicle into a retaining wall near the intersection of 13th Street and 20th Avenue. Conway initially fled the scene. Following the crash, Conway was located by police — though the statement doesn’t say how or where — and evaluated by Green County EMS, who found him injured slightly, but not severely enough to be transported by ambulance.
His vehicle was severely damaged, police reported, adding that his seatbelt status was unknown. The airbags did not deploy. Conway’s vehicle was driven from the scene.
Conway faces charges of Unsafe Lane Deviation, Failure of Operator to Notify Police of an Accident, Inattentive Driving, Hit-and-Run to Property Adjacent to Highway, and first-offense Operating While Intoxicated (OWI). All five charges are traffic forfeitures in Wisconsin, combining for $2,078.70 in fines. Conway is due back in court at 9 a.m. on Sept. 14 in front of Judge Jane Bucher.
