The year was 1907. A team of marksmen from the Willhelm Tell Schuetzenverein (shooting club) of New Glarus, Wisconsin traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to compete in the National championship. The New Glarus team had won the State Championship of the Wisconsin Sharpshooters’ Union at Milwaukee in 1904, and at La Crosse in 1906. The team, traveled to Charleston by train with all their gear (clothes, rifles, re-loading tools, etc.). Theadore Roosevelt made the opening shot by telegraph, and Kaiser Willhelm, of Germany, provided medals for the winners. The New Glarus team won many prizes during the five-day event. J.M.
