In 1920 Herman Meier posed in front of his Stoughton 15 passenger bus as he organized his first bus run between Freeport and Madison, with a stop in Monroe. He grew up in this area and named his bus company Southern Wisconsin Transportation which grew into Badger Bus Co and Badger Coaches Inc. After purchasing a Cadillac touring car, this larger bus had to be retired because of the hills in Dane County this side of Belleville. It was written that this Cadillac was used to clear a path of snow, even when the plows couldn’t even get through. Throughout its history, Monroe had as many as nine bus lines servicing travelers to and from Monroe, and the bus depots moved many times from one business location to another. See you in the spring.
