The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Grant, Lafayette and Iowa counties earlier this week, with extremely hot temperatures expected to continue into the weekend.
Heat indexes to 102 are possible, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s through the weekend.
Meanwhile, the state Department of Natural Resources issued an air quality advisory statewide through Thursday at noon due to Canadian wildfire smoke.
Air quality is expected to range from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Very Unhealthy as wildfire smoke tracks south and southeast from Minnesota and Ontario.
The DNR said the air quality advisory is likely to be extended to some parts of the state past Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), hot and humid conditions will persist into Saturday, with afternoon heat index readings in the 90s to around 100 degrees. The prolonged period of hot temperatures may pose a risk to those without adequate cooling, or those who must spend extended time outdoors.
Thunderstorm chances return to the forecast Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening. The best coverage (30 to 60%) is expected Friday afternoon and evening. The storms will be capable of producing heavy downpours and gusty winds, with the overall threat for severe weather being low.
