UW-Oshkosh coaches conducted a football camp for Black Hawk and Monticello high school players in South Wayne on Tuesday, July 7.
Players took part in movement and agility drills, tackling leverage drills, and position-specific workouts.
Craig Stenbroten is a Monticello High School graduate. He is the Defensive Coordinator for the UW-Oshkosh Titans and coaches inside linebackers. Stenbroten led the camp and was assisted by UW-Oshkosh assistants Justin Engen, Brody Milz (a Black Hawk High School graduate), Drew Sperry, Ben Wellhoefer, and Nick Mazurczak. Black Hawk-Warren coach Desi Breadon and Monticello High School coach Tyler Smith also assisted.
Stenbroten said it became much more convenient to visit high schools to hold football camp than to have students travel to UW-Oshkosh for football camp. In addition to holding camp at Black Hawk, he and his staff have held camp at Western Dubuque High School and Kaukauna High School.
During the Titans’ WIAC championship and NCAA playoff season of 2012, Stenbroten helped Black Hawk High School graduate Taylor Goodman become the program’s first NCAA Division III All-American at linebacker.
Breadon said it’s camps like this one that gets players prepared for what to expect during the course of a regular high school season.
“The foundation starts here and it’s those small little drills and small little movements that help you win those big games playing in late October, early November. Hopefully today set that foundation that we’re playing late in November from doing those small little drills,” said Breadon.
Black Hawk-Warren was solid defensively last season, allowing just 13.6 points per game. The Warriors will look to improve on that this season as they open the season August 21 at Southwestern-East Dubuque.
Monticello is scheduled to compete in 8-player football again this fall. The Ponies are slated to open the season August 20 at home against Wonewoc-Center.
