During a July of 1977 thunderstorm, 10 Holstein cows were killed by lightning on the Arnold Fryer farm near Browntown. A bolt of lightning struck the cows while standing under this large oak tree, killing them outright and stunning another three which were given a slim chance of survival. The next-door farm also had a cow struck, with another cow dazed but later recovered.
Upcoming events sponsored by the Green County Historical Society (GCHS) is participation in the April 26 Wine Walk sponsored by Main Street Monroe. GCHS will also be participating in the City-wide rummage sales May 9-11, with many collectible items for sale.
The museum will hold its grand reopening the first weekend in June on Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. GCHS has done a large refurbishment and complete reorganization of the displays. The museum volunteers invite the public to see and learn about Monroe’s history.
GCHS is also looking for donations of items from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s; especially a poodle skirt, penny loafers, transistor radio and an aluminum Christmas tree. Displays will be updated accordingly. Contact Linda Lostetter 608-558-0175 for arrangements.
