Hammer sets 2 PRs, earns state berth

BARABOO - New Glarus freshman Maddie Hammer qualified for state in two individual events for the Monroe-New Glarus swimming team Saturday in Baraboo.

Hammer will be seeded ninth at state in the 100-meter freestyle after posting a personal record of 54.59 in Baraboo, and she will be seeded 11th in the 100-meter breaststroke after finishing with a PR of 1:08.58.

Overall, the Monroe-New Glarus swimming team set 13 PRs in the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional.

"What a day full of energy, priceless faces, as the girls looked at their times and tears of joy," Monroe-New Glarus swimming coach Linda Moser said in an email. "All of the girls swam amazing but more importantly showed what being a team is all about with encouragement, high fives, fist bumps, smiles tears and hugs. I am so proud of each and everyone of them."

The 200 medley relay team of Hammer, junior Abby Oudinot, junior Anna Meritt and Anna Wolf posted a PR of 1:57.42, missing state competition by just 1 second. The 200 free relay team of Oudinot, Skylar Lassen, Merrit and Wolf set a PR with a time of 4:01.15.

Senior Monica Sefcik set PRs in the 500 freestyle and 50 freestyle with times of 6:04.31 and 31.50, respectively.

Reagan Andersen also posted two PRs in Baraboo, with a time of 1:02.11 in the 100 freestyle and 1:11.43 in the 100 backstroke.

Lassen also set PRs in the 100 freestyle with a time of 59.09 and in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.45.

Oudinot set a PR in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.92.

Wolf swam to a PR in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.14.

Division 2 state competition is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Natatorium.
