MONROE - Coach Linda Moser is using dual meets early in the season to build toward the championship swimming season in October and November.

Monona Grove knocked off Monroe in the Cheesemakers' home opener 115-55 at the Green County YMCA on Tuesday.

"Even though there weren't a lot of PRs, I still think they swam great," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "I didn't see one girl give up in any race. We know going into a dual meet we will get beat up especially in the Badger South Conference. It's just the nature of the beast in the Badger South. You spend the season trying to figure out what your best combinations are."

Monroe senior Rachel Root won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 30.75 seconds, and she finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:07.81).

Root teamed with junior Angie Beaver, seniors Sarah Kind and Briana Katzenberger to take second place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:18.56. The same quartet finished second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:33.31. The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of sophomores Haley Kaiser, Mackenzie Hesgard, Corlissa Robertson and junior Amanda Putz took second (2:23.23).

The Cheesemakers have 12 new swimmers this season, and Moser is excited about the progress Putz and Grace Moehn have been making.

"Amanda Putz has made tremendous strides," Moser said. "She swam a couple of varsity events. (The new swimmers) have started to move up. It's not going to happen over night."
