Hilda Gille, age 94, of Monroe passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was born on April 15, 1926 the daughter of August and Fredia (Bamert) Schlafli, Sr. in Winslow. She was a 1944 graduate of Argyle High School. Hilda was united in marriage to Leo Gille, Jr. on June 29, 1946 at St. Victor’s Catholic Church in Monroe.
Hilda worked at Kroger and IGA in Monroe for 33 years, retiring in 1990. She was a longtime member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor’s Catholic Church. Hilda enjoyed spending time at the Monroe Senior Center; she also enjoyed yoga, walking, and garage sales. Hilda supported Green Haven, St. Vincent de Paul, Green County Humane Society, and the Apostolate to the Handicapped.
Hilda’s biggest joys in life were her family and her faith. To all that knew her, she will be remembered most by her beautiful smile, her great cooking, and her generous heart.
Hilda is survived by her son, Wayne Gille of Monroe; daughters, Linda (Robert) Flanagan and Tammie (John) Gille-Wartenweiler both of Monroe; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo “Bud” Gille, Jr.; son, Roger Gille; brothers, August and Fredrick Schlafli; and sister, Rose Emford.
