Alton M. Sherman, age 76, of Monticello passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 surrounded by his family at his home.  He was born on February 4, 1948 the son of Oren and Beulah (Turkelson) Sherman at the Richland Hospital located in Richland Center, WI.  He was the second born of twin boys.  He graduated from Riverdale High School in Muscoda, WI.  He then attended the University of Platteville branch campus in Richland Center.  His junior year he attended the University of Platteville. 

In 1969 he and his twin brother purchased a dairy farm in rural Monticello, WI.  In 1973 he married Ruth Annette Hay of Warren, IL.  He and Ruth had three children, Brian, Kathleen, and Matthew.  During his farming career Alton received the Green County Conservation Farmer Award. In 1991 The Sherman Brothers Farming partnership was dissolved and he started a career working for the town of Exeter in Green County.  That career lasted for 23 years at which time he retired.  He worked part time delivering parts for Weaver Auto Parts in New Glarus for 7 years.  He then started fighting cancer until his death.  Alton was a member of the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello where he served on the church board.  He was also a member of Jaycee’s, Monticello Town & Country Club, and the Monticello Foundation.

Alton and Ruth made many wonderful memories playing cards and camping with friends, traveling throughout Wisconsin and Illinois to enjoy numerous state parks.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Monticello.  A son, Brian (Sue) and three granddaughters, Sierra, Jenna, and Kayla.  A daughter, Kathleen (Brian) Grossen and grandsons, Garrett and Grant.  A son, Matthew (Kristi) and a bonus grandson, Adam.  He is also survived by a sister, Bernie Beutler, a brother, Mel (Marcia), a twin brother, Milton (Suzette), and a sister, Lynette (Russ) Lund. As well as many nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Beauford.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello with Pastor Larry Balleine officiating.  Burial will follow at Exeter Cemetery. 

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe.  Condolences may be sent
