Man arrested after robbery attempt, assault

MONROE - A 24-year-old Monroe man was taken to Monroe Clinic Hospital for facial injuries, which he told police he received during an assault and an attempted robbery early Thursday outside a tavern on Monroe's southwest side.

Philip D. Hoffman, 26, Monroe, was identified as a suspect in the incident and taken into custody at about 7 a.m. Thursday in Monticello. Hoffman was jailed at the Green County jail on charges of attempted armed robbery and substantial battery, awaiting a later court appearance.

Monroe police and Green County EMS were dispatched at about 2:15 a.m. Thursday to the 2100 block of 10th Street in Monroe for the alleged assault. Green County Sheriff's Department assisted in apprehending Hoffman.

According to the police initial investigation, the victim was approached by a man he allegedly knows outside the Horseshoe Saloon tavern, in the 1900 block of 10th Avenue, at about closing time.

The man demanded money from the victim for an alleged debt owed to a relative of the man. The man began beating the victim and searching the victim's pockets.

The victim alleged that the man displayed a small knife during the course of this beating.

After not finding anything, the man left.

The victim then went to the residence of a family member, and police were called.

From the victim's recount of the incident, police officers were able to identify the suspect as Hoffman.

After a lengthy search for Hoffman, police learned that Hoffman was at a residence in the 200 block of South Pierce Street in Monticello.

Green County deputies went to the residence and took Hoffman into custody at about 7 a.m.

The victim was treated and released from the Monroe Clinic Hospital.
