DARLINGTON — A Darlington resident is out on a $2,500 cash bond for four felony counts of possessing child pornography on a cellphone.

Luis E. Leon-Martinez, 28, who goes by Byanka Leon-Martinez, stood mute at an initial appearance Dec. 16 and is due back in court Feb. 28 for a preliminary hearing in the case. Charges were filed after police executed a search warrant on Leon-Martinez’s Galena Street home Nov. 29.

According to the criminal complaint:

The investigation started with a report from Facebook of videos depicting sexual assaults of prepubescent females, including an infant, sent over Messenger. Investigators determined the videos were sent from an IP address belonging to Leon-Martinez.

Police used Google Translate for part of their interview of Leon-Martinez.

Through the translation app, Leon-Martinez said, “When those videos appeared on my phone” — from an account that is now suspended or removed — “I left them there, and did not bother them anymore. I closed my Facebook account because those funny videos kept coming and getting sent back to people. I don’t know how it happened.”

Leon-Martinez got a phone number change because of the ongoing issue with the videos.

Leon-Martinez’s boyfriend told police Leon-Martinez had complained of the phone not working or losing power but had never mentioned any problems with bad videos.

A forensic investigation of Leon-Martinez’s phone located the video files. The origin of the videos is unclear, only that they were files sent over Facebook Messenger, but none are described as depicting or being created by Leon-Martinez.
