fatal accident

JUDA — Emergency crews responded to a fatal accident in the Town of Jefferson on a frigid Monday morning, January 20.

At about 9:38 AM, the Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle crash in the N2200 block of Richland Road, according to a press release from Green County Sheriff’s Office. The crash was about 2 miles east of Monroe.

Deputies immediately responded to the scene, along with Juda ire Department and Green County EMS.

“Preliminary investigation determined a semi tractor trailer unit was parked on Richland Road due to a mechanical problem,” said the release. “A northbound pickup truck collided with the semi-trailer.”

The pickup truck driver was later identified as an 84-year-old man from rural Juda. He apparently was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The victim was transported to SSM Health Emergency in Monroe, where he was pronounced dead.

His name was not immediately released.

The driver of the semi-truck was identified as a 66-year-old Waukee, Iowa, man, who was uninjured.  He also had not been identified by police as of late Monday. The semi had flashing lights activated prior to the crash, police added.

The semi-trailer sustained “moderate damage” and was removed from the scene, police said. The pickup truck, however, sustained severe front-end damage, with no airbag deployment and was towed from the scene.
