John Streiff hands the keys of his grocery store to Ernie Gempeler. John Streiff was born March 6, 1916, in New Glarus Township, Green County. He was the son of John L. and Lena Legler Streiff. He graduated from New Glarus High School in 1934 and subsequently attended Madison Business College. He was married to Olga Arn on Oct. 12, 1939. Streiff ran a grocery store in Monticello for many years. He was in the service in World War II, serving from Oct. 8, 1943, until Feb. 16, 1946, where he served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army in the Infantry Engineer Reconnaissance Tank Armored School. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theatre Service Medal. Following his discharge from the service, he re-opened his grocery store in a new location, working there until retiring in 1973. He became a resident of the New Glarus Home in 1982. He died in 1984.
