Our View: Not too early to put Focus on Energy

With the dog days of summer upon us, it's easy to forget that in a few short months we'll be dealing with what seems like Wisconsin's longest season - winter.

And although prices for oil, and subsequently gasoline, have fallen in recent weeks, they're still at a level that's going to significantly increase home heating bills over last year.

One of our state legislators has an idea on how to fight back.

Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, suggests Focus on Energy, a state program designed to help homeowners find resources and financial assistance to save both energy and money.

"Even though it's August and it's hot, right now is the time to contact Focus on Energy and plan for the very costly heating season ahead," Schultz said Wednesday.

Focus on Energy helps homeowners and businesses install energy-efficient and renewable energy equipment to heat, light and power their homes and businesses.

The program is funded by a small fee on utility bills. You're already paying for it, so you ought to take advantage and make it a good investment.

Schultz said every dollar put into the program yields about $5 in energy savings and economic benefits for consumers.

Focus on Energy provides rebates on Energy Star lighting, appliances, heating and cooling equipment, insulation and renewable energy projects.

But Focus on Energy isn't just about identifying efficient equipment.

The program will send expert consultants to people's homes to conduct thorough inspections of all systems in the home and identify ways to save energy.

The program will help find a contractor, help write grant proposals and implement projects.

It's better for people to contact Focus on Energy now than to wait until their bills start to shoot through the roof.
