From Catherine Boughton
Monroe
Our family moved to Monroe a month before our oldest started Kindergarten. The timing of that move was no accident. While my husband and I loved the little town where we met, married, and started raising our family — there seemed to be an overall lack of commitment by the majority of the community to prioritize and invest in the schools. We had a tough decision to make. Deciding where to root and grow as a family meant finding a community that values their school system and actively supports it. We heard there were great things happening at Monroe’s elementary schools. For me, it was a move back home after 18 years away. We are incredibly grateful for the experience our now 5th and 3rd graders have had at Northside. Every day, the educators and staff bring enthusiasm, patience, and compassion to the students - in addition to the academics they teach. They deserve to work and grow in an environment that is safe and kept up to date.
Like the building repairs done at Parkside over the last two years, Northside is also in need of similar repairs. Currently, for example, there are classrooms that have water leaking in after heavy rains, floors that are dangerously slick due to condensation and inadequate air circulation, a PA system that needs repair, and bathrooms that are not up to code. We need to address these issues now. The Northside referendum addresses the following: gutters, roof, and siding; fire sprinkler installation; renovating bathrooms to ADA code; PA system; and a new HVAC system that will properly heat/cool/ and provide improved air circulation — the past year has taught us that this is quite helpful in keeping both student and staff safe.
