Monroe rallies past WW, NG wins twice

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers weren’t about to let a six-run first inning by the Whitewater Whippets keep them from getting their second win of the season and a season sweep of Whitewater on Thursday, April 23.

The Cheesemakers stormed back with four runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to top Whitewater 9-7 in RVC-Valley action. Ian Berg went 2x4 including a double with four RBIs and scored two runs to lead the comeback for Monroe. Berg also picked up a save by pitching a scoreless seventh inning for Monroe. Landon Wuebben got the win with two-thirds of an inning in relief of Zane Seffrood.

The Cheesemakers (2-5-1, 2-2 RVC-Valley) were aided by six walks and four hit batters. Berg tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning with a two-run double and scored on a single by Seffrood to make it 8-7. Trent Wyss scored an insurance run by scoring on a passed ball.

Belleville 9, Monroe 3

Austin McKinley hit a triple, scored a run and drove in a run and the Belleville Wildcats drew nine walks to beat the Monroe Cheesemakers 9-3 in nonconference baseball on Friday, April 24.

Marcus Hebgen, Dawson Smith, and Gavan Crum also drove in runs as the Wildcats put up three runs in the first inning and three runs in the fifth inning to turn back the Cheesemakers.

Third baseman Blake Geisler got a pair of RBIs and Ian Berg scored two runs to lead the Cheesemakers.

Belleville (6-3, 1-1 Capitol South) was set to host Wisconsin Heights in a Capitol South game on Tuesday, April 28. Monroe (2-6, 2-2 RVC-Valley) was to travel to Edgerton for a Rock Valley conference crossover game the same day.

New Glarus 3, Wisconsin Heights 0

Nolan Julseth hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Landon Stelter drove in a run in the fifth inning to lead the New Glarus Glarner Knights past the Wisconsin Heights Vanguards 3-0 in Capitol South action on Thursday, April 23.

Kamm Nehmer and Brock Roth combined on a two-hit shutout for the Glarner Knights. Nehmer pitched six innings and walked three and struck out seven.

New Glarus 10, Edgerton 7

Landon Stelter and Brock Roth each drove in three runs as the New Glarus Glarner Knights fought off the Edgerton Crimson Tide 10-7 in nonconference baseball on Friday, April 24.

Matthew Roth hit a home run and drove in two runs to help the Knights get the win.

New Glarus (3-3-1, 1-1 Capitol South) had another nonconference game scheduled on Monday, April 27 at home against Dodgeville and a Capitol Conference game slated for Tuesday, April 28 on the road at Waterloo.

Marshall 5, Belleville 4

Rayden Taylor drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Marcus Hebgen struck out 11 batters, but the Belleville Wildcats still came up short against the Marshall Cardinals 5-4 in Capitol South action on Thursday, April 23.

Belleville took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, only to see Marshall come back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesley Henry was 2x3 with a double and scored two runs for Belleville (6-3, 1-1 Capitol South).

Evansville 13, Brodhead-Juda 1

The Evansville Blue Devils scored a total of 10 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to rout the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals 13-1 in five innings in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division action on Thursday, April 23.

Braylon Strehlow scored the only run of the game for the Cardinals in the third inning. Chase Bauman got two of the Cardinals’ five hits.

River Ridge 9, Argyle-Black Hawk 0

Braylon Bidlingmaier got the only hit of the game for the Warbirds, a double in the fourth inning as the River Ridge Timberwolves shut out the Argyle-Black Hawk Warbirds 9-0 on Friday, April 24.

Blake Reynolds set the tone for the Timberwolves with a solo homer to left in the first inning.

Jackson Berget, Cole Dunlavey, and Max Soper all drew walks for the Warbirds, but were left stranded.

Argyle-Black Hawk (0-8, 0-6 Six Rivers) had a conference game scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at Barneveld.

Belmont 7, Pecatonica 5

The Pecatonica Vikings tried to rally with four runs in the sixth inning, but same up short in a 7-5 loss to the Belmont Braves in Six Rivers Conference action on Friday, April 24.

Catcher Cooper Schraepfer drove in two runs and 2B Marty Anderson went 2x4 with two runs scored to lead the Vikings.

Pecatonica (3-3, 3-2) were to face Benton-Shullsburg at Benton in a Six Rivers Conference game scheduled on Monday, April 27 followed by another conference game at Highland scheduled on Tuesday, April 28.

Monticello-Albany 11, Pecatonica 9

Cayden Marti and Dominic Schroeder both went 3x4 with a double and combined for three RBIs help the Monticello-Albany Space Stallions get an 11-9 win over the Pecatonica Vikings in Six Rivers Conference baseball on Thursday, April 23.

Monticello-Albany formed their baseball co-op in 2018 and it was their first-ever win over Pecatonica. Hunter Grossen, Korbin Timm, and Milo Smith also doubled in the win for the Space Stallions.

Rylan Fisher had two hits, including a double and an RBI for the Vikings.

Shullsburg-Benton 7, Monticello-Albany 0

The Space Stallions could only muster two hits against Shullsburg-Benton and were shutout 7-0 in Six Rivers conference action on Friday, April 24.

Evan Feller and Tyler Patchen got the only hits in the game for MA. Patchen started on the mound for the Space Stallions and pitched four innings, giving up five runs on five hits, four walks and he struck out six.

Monticello-Albany (1-7, 1-4) had a nonconference game scheduled at home for Tuesday, April 28 against Palmyra-Eagle and another nonconference game Thursday, April 30 at Darlington.

Iowa-Grant 6, Darlington 3

Starting pitcher Calum Crist hit a double and drove in two runs but the Iowa-Grant Panthers used a six-run third inning to top the Darlington Redbirds 6-3 in SWAL baseball on Thursday, April 23.

Tag Goebel also hit a double and drove in a run for Darlington. Zeke Zuberbuhler went 2x4.

Darlington 6, Fennimore 4

The Darlington Redbirds came back from a 4-1 seventh inning deficit to score five times and take a 6-4 win over the Fennimore Golden Eagles in SWAL conference baseball on Friday, April 24.

Grady O’Brien’s two-run single in the 7th inning put the Redbirds ahead. Mason Wiegel pitched six innings and allowed four runs on three hits. Wiegel walked three and struck out six to get the win. Dante Glendenning pitched a scoreless seventh inning to get a save.

Darlington (3-4, 2-3 SWAL) had Riverdale on their schedule for a SWAL home game on Tuesday, April 28 and a nonconference game at home against Monticello-Albany on Thursday, April 30.

Mount Horeb 14, Brodhead-Juda 0

The Mount Horeb Vikings put the hurt on the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals with a 14-0 rout on Friday, April 24 in a nonconference game. The big blow came in the third inning when Mount Horeb scored six runs.

Chase Bauman, Sam Searls, and Dylan Ross accounted for the only hits in the game by the Cardinals.

Brodhead-Juda fell to 2-5 overall with the loss. The Cardinals were scheduled for a Rock Valley crossover game against Whitewater on Tuesday, April 28.
