NEW GLARUS - Junior pitcher Abby Schiferl allowed just three hits and Black Hawk cashed in on most of the 24 walks issued by three New Glarus pitchers to roll to the non-conference victory in the season opener for both teams at Glarner Park.

Shortstop Jen Wellnitz and center fielder Kassy Paulson each drove in three runs for the Warriors, while catcher Michaela Akins, right fielder Courtney Wilde and Schiferl each had two RBIs.

Black Hawk leadoff hitter Tessa Cushman singled, walked five times and scored four runs. Paulson also scored four runs for the Warriors.

"It's one of those game where you can't lay too much on it," Black Hawk coach Roger Jackson said. "But we're very young, so I don't care how ugly a win it is, it's a good win."

Schiferl, in her first season as the Warriors' No. 1 pitcher, issued eight walks and recorded six strikeouts - including striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game via the mercy rule.

"She was pretty consistent," Jackson said.

"I can do better," Schiferl said.

That said, Schiferl was happy to start the season with a victory after the Warriors struggled in 2011.

"I think this is going to motivate us for the season," Schiferl said.

"Coming out and winning this, yes, I think we are improved."

Leadoff hitter Brooke Klassy collected two of New Glarus' three hits - both singles.
