STOUGHTON - The Monroe volleyball team battled back to take the second set, but the Cheesemakers lost a tight match to Stoughton in four games on Tuesday.
The Vikings defeated the Cheesemakers 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 27-25. The Cheesemakers' switch to a 6-2 offensive set has paid dividends.
"They played well," Monroe coach Danya Ward said. "It's just a matter of finishing it off."
Monroe senior Becca Armstrong had a team-high 10 kills. Monroe junior Taylor Barrett had eight kills and a "ridiculous" 10 blocks, according to Ward.
Senior Ashley Curtis had 19 digs and three aces, senior Heather Barta recorded 22 assists, and Kayla Updike had 11 assists.
Ward said there was an unusually long break after the second game.
"We started out a little slow," she said.
The Cheesemakers (4-10, 0-4 Badger South) had a four-point lead in the fourth game they couldn't hang on to.
"We are just not used to being in the lead," Ward said. "I feel like we have to be in the position [of] fighting our way back."
Monroe will host Monona Grove on Thursday.
"I think it will give us some confidence," Ward said of Tuesday's match. "I think they will be able to carry this over."
