Vikings come back to edge Comets

BLANCHARDVILLE - Junior Jake Dearth and freshman Carter Ruegsegger knocked in key runs in the fifth inning to propel the Pecatonica High School baseball team to a 7-6 win over Albany on Thursday in a rescheduled game.

Albany senior Tyler Dahl turned in a solid pitching performance against Pecatonica (18-1, 12-0 Six Rivers East), which is second in the WisSports.net Division 4 coaches' poll. Dahl pitched six innings and gave up seven runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked four.

"Tyler battled for them on the mound," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "Tyler did a really nice job for them. He got ahead in the count. He kept them in the game."

Albany led 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth when the Vikings rallied to score four runs to take a 7-5 lead.

Pecatonica junior Presly Hauser walked to start the rally in the fifth. Senior Kyle Kleppe, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, drove in a run with a single. Junior A.J. Hendrickson followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 5. Dearth had a go-ahead RBI single, and Ruegsegger knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly to give the Vikings a 7-5 lead.

"I'm happy we came back and rallied," Strommen said.

Hendrickson picked up the win for the Vikings. He pitched 5 2⁄3 innings and gave up six runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked two. Sophomore Evan Prust pitched 1 1⁄3 shutout innings in relief.

Albany senior Cole Trapp went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Comets.

"Evan made his first varsity start a couple weeks ago, and we brought him into a tight situation, and he got us out of a jam," Strommen said. "I'm really happy with his performance."
