WHITEWATER - The only way May 21 will be trumped as Jim Bartholf's favorite date of the season is if state qualifiers Matt Turek and Levi Janssens can stay hot at the state tennis meet next Thursday.
"Monroe had one of its best sectional days in four or five years," Bartholf lauded.
Only needing one victory to advance to the big show at Neilsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, the No. 1 doubles tandem of Turek and Janssens doubled their expectations on Wednesday.
"The boys played quality tennis today, maybe the best of the season," Bartholf said. "Levi had the great returns and Matt put the balls away at the net."
The seniors first knocked out a duo from Delafield St. Johns Military Academy, 6-3, 6-2, before losing, for the third time this season, to Dirk VanRybrock and Phil Paradise of Madison Edgewood, 6-1, 6-1. Unfazed, they took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Edgerton's No. 1 team to claim third.
Monroe's No. 3 team of Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn won its ladder, defeating Tim Morgan and Scott Wilson of Edgewood in the finals, 6-4, 6-4. The duo finished their season with an 11-2 mark.
No. 4 singles player Dan Becker wrapped up at 13-6 with a win in the semifinals and a loss in the finals to Yunhuui Zhao of McFarland, 6-3, 6-3.
Monroe finished third as a team with 25 points, while Badger South rival Madison Edgewood ran away with the sectional title with 42.
