STOUGHTON - A bigger Stoughton offensive line paved the way as the Vikings handed Monroe its first loss 24-7 on Friday.
"They just played more physical and wore us down," Monroe coach Curt Miller said of the Vikings. "They just played more physical and aggressive and that is why they won. As the game went on we just ran out of gas."
Monroe senior running back Cody Wolf rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries. Wolf ripped off a 62-yard run in the second quarter to help the Cheesemakers rebound from a 7-0 deficit. Monroe sophomore quarterback Tyler Elmer then hooked up with junior Jaron Kuester on a 5-yard TD pass to tie the game at 7.
"That was a big play at the time," Miller said.
Stoughton (1-2, 1-0 Badger South) responded with a fake punt to keep a scoring drive alive. It appeared that Monroe's Cole Murray had come up with an interception in the end zone. However, Stoughton tight end Buck Krueger wrestled the ball away from him and officials ruled it was a touchdown instead of calling Murray down by contact.
"It was a big momentum play," Miller said. "We were still in a position to recover from that."
The Vikings led 17-7 at the half and the Cheesemakers had to open up the passing game after falling behind 24-7. Elmer was 5 of 16 passing for 26 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
"He (Elmer) put the ball in some good positions," Miller said. "In a lot of times we didn't make plays. He was under a lot of duress. I'm sure he would like to have some throws back. He will learn from it and move forward."
