CAMBRIDGE - The Glarner Knights battled back from a seven-point first-quarter deficit, but fell, 53-47, to the Cambridge Blue Jays in the Capitol South conference opener for both teams Thursday.
New Glarus was able to take a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Jays surged ahead in the final minute, forcing the Knights to foul. Cambridge made the free throws.
"It was a close, tough battle, but it slipped away from us in the end," New Glarus head coach Braden Rindy said.
Three players scored in double figures for New Glarus, led by senior Michelle Preston with 17 points. Senior Tanya Gruter scored 14 and sophomore Aycia Atwell added 10.
New Glarus (2-2 overall, 0-1 Capitol South) will host Barneveld in a non-conference game Dec. 22.
Riverdale 49, Darlington 46
DARLINGTON - For the second-straight game, the Redbirds saw a fourth-quarter lead slip away. On Thursday night, Darlington fell to Riverdale, 49-46, in SWAL conference action.
The Redbirds led 23-18 at halftime and headed into the fourth quarter with a 37-33 lead only to be outscored 16-9 by Riverdale over the final eight minutes.
Darlington junior Kelsey Fink dropped in 17 points to lead all scorers, which included four 3-pointers. The Redbirds also got nine points from senior Ashley Martin and eight points from junior Miranda Wiegel.
Darlington (3-2, 2-1 SWAL) will travel to Black Hawk for a non-conference game Dec. 22.
Barneveld 63, Albany 31
ALBANY - The Comets had aspirations of competing for a Six Rivers East Conference title.
Their conference title aspirations took an early season hit as Barneveld rolled to a 63-31 win over Albany Thursday.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 17-8 first quarter lead and led by 13 points at halftime.
Albany (4-3, 1-1 Six Rivers East) couldn't solve Barneveld's 2-3 zone.
"We couldn't penetrate the zone," Albany coach Mike Brunhoefer said. "With the injuries I have, I just don't have the post players. It was just a long night."
Albany junior Courtney Pfeuti scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Comets. Fellow junior Sydney Bump had seven points.
