NEW GLARUS - Monticello senior Courtney Leuzinger tossed a three-hit shutout to help the Ponies beat New Glarus 5-0 Thursday.

It marked the first win of the season for Monticello. The Ponies (1-1) scored four runs in the first inning off New Glarus freshman pitcher Riley Parker. However, two errors by the Glarner Knights opened the door to the big inning. Monticello senior Samantha DeVoe, who went 1-for-3, had a two-run triple in the first that sparked the Ponies.

Parker pitched a complete game and gave up five runs, but just two earned runs. She struck out four and walked two.

"We had back-to-back errors in the first inning that led to those runs," New Glarus assistant coach Drew Moen said. "We should have been out of the inning before DeVoe's triple."

Parker pitched four shutout innings before the Ponies tacked on one more run in the sixth.

"Riley did a good job all night," Moen said. "She kept her composure and got out of some jams. She did a great job of keeping the ball down."

Leuzinger was even more dominant than Parker. Leuzinger struck out 10 and walked two.

New Glarus' Ashley Judd went 1-for-3 with a double to lead the Knights.
