FREEPORT - The Freeport Pretzel Fans Club is pleased to announce Sue (Cummins) Pick as the 39th annual recipient of the Glenn "Pat" Holmes Award.

This award is presented annually to the athlete, coach, or athletic director of Freeport High School who has best displayed the outstanding qualities of leadership, character, competitiveness and athletic ability as set forth by Pat Holmes.

Pick, who has lived in Monroe for 32 years and works at Monroe Clinic, proved to be a gifted athlete and fierce competitor in track, volleyball, softball and basketball. During her high school career (1975-1979), she played on seven conference championship teams, which also garnered four district and three regional titles.

She earned all-conference honors in basketball as a junior and senior and in softball as a senior. Her teammates voted her Most Valuable in basketball her junior and senior years and in volleyball her senior year. During her junior year, Freeport won its first Big Nine Conference All-Sports trophy with a huge lift from the girls winning titles in volleyball, basketball, swimming and track.

Coach Linda Hock paid her the highest compliment, saying, "She brought more professionalism to my coaching."

Title IX, the federal government's legislation that came into effect in 1972, mandated that girls in school shall be given the same opportunities as boys. That meant equal schedules, equipment, uniforms, use of practice facilities and locker space. Doubt and concern caused changes to be gradual. But Sue Cummins, with her outstanding qualities of character and leadership that went beyond the athletic field, had a profound effect on all those female athletes in the Freeport area at the time. She served as a positive role model for her fellow female athletes.

The Pretzel Fans Club will be honoring Pick at a dinner and awards banquet Saturday, February 1. Following the banquet, an awards presentation will be conducted at the Freeport High School gymnasium during halftime of the varsity boys basketball game. A general reception will be held in the cafeteria following the game.
