OREGON - A short-handed Monroe girls soccer team lost to Oregon 4-1 Thursday.

"I don't think the score indicated how close the game was," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "It was an intense and physical game. It's just one of those things that didn't go our way. We have a depleted squad."

The Cheesemakers (6-4, 2-2 Badger South) were playing with several players battling illness and injuries.

Monroe struck first when junior Kylee Ritschard scored a goal on an assist from Briana Beck at 1 minute, 2 seconds. Beck's cross turned into a goal when Ritschard scored at the far post.

The Panthers got a golden scoring opportunity when the Cheesemakers were called for a hand ball in the box. Oregon's Jenny Kaderabek scored on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1 at 15:41. Kaderabek added her second goal at 20:56 to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead at the half.

"I think unfortunately the first two goals Oregon scored were due to unforced errors," O'Neill said. "I think the team as a whole got down after that."

Oregon's Kali Jahn scored two second-half goals.

Monroe senior Alyssa Studer had several shots on goal and just missed scoring after hitting one off the cross bar. Monroe senior goal keeper Gail LaVoie had 15 saves.

The Cheesemakers have played a lot of games with limited numbers, the legs of many players may have just wore down.

"I'm not sure they could have done anything different in the second half," O'Neill said of the Cheesemakers. "Oregon has a really good team. Kali Jahn is a really fast player. We were certainly beaten by speed in the end."
