BELOIT - Monroe High School junior Hunter Weckerly turned in a quality start on the mound, but third-ranked Beloit Turner beat the Cheesemakers 3-0 Monday in a nonconference game.

Weckerly pitched a complete game and gave up one earned run on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.

"Hunter pitched a great game," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It's exactly what we wanted to see. He commanded the zone and threw his changeup to get ground balls."

The Trojans (14-2), No. 3 in the WisSports.net Division 2 state poll, limited the Cheesemakers (10-8) to five hits. Monroe junior Carter Sawdey went 2-for-4.

"I thought our approach at the plate was fine," Huffman said. "It was a tough night to hit with the wind. We put the ball in play. It was just hit at a lot of gloves tonight."

Monroe (5-3) is one-half game behind Fort Atkinson (5-2) and Madison Edgewood (6-3) in a jumbled race for Badger South Conference title. Monroe will play at Stoughton (5-3) today. The Cheesemakers host Fort Atkinson on Friday.

"We will have to play better if we are going to get a shot at a conference championship," Huffman said.
