New Glarus girls roll past Waterloo

NEW GLARUS - After falling to a tough Marshall team earlier in the week, the New Glarus girls basketball team was able to hit on all cylinders in a 65-23 victory over conference foe Waterloo.

For the lady Knights and coach Megan Scheele, sticking to what they do best gives them an opportunity to hang in games with anybody.

"We came out ready to play tonight, and we got into our 1-3-1 press right away," Scheele said. "Our team is able to get energized anytime we get into the press, and the girls were able to do a good job in creating some turnovers."

In the second of their three scheduled games this week, Scheele knows that proper planning and rest are fundamental in approaching each and every game.

"Tonight we wanted to keep it a little more light by rotating more often," Scheele said. "But basically, we really want to emphasize our press and our half-court defense, which are important to our team's success."

Courtney Feller once again was able to connect from distance, hitting four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points. Teammate Vanessa Narveson also had a solid outing, adding 19 points.

"She (Feller) is working hard in practice this week and has been one of our strongest workers throughout the season," said Scheele. "She and Vanessa were able to get into a groove and give us a spark. We make it a point on our team to find the players with the hot hands, and I thought we did a great job in doing that tonight."

New Glarus (8-9, 4-3) ends this week's string of games against Wisconsin Heights today, Feb. 14.

Argyle 67, Darlington 26

ARGYLE - After talking things over in a game against Darlington on Thursday night, Argyle coach Kurt Ritschards and his team came out with a head full of steam in the second half of their 67-26 victory.

"We just weren't playing as clean as we could in the first half," Ritschards said. "But we had a good chat during halftime and we were able to make some adjustments."

The Orioles went into intermission with a seven-point lead, but during the second half were able to outscore the Redbirds 43-9.

"We played great in the second half, as we were able to create some opportunities off of forced turnovers," Ritschards said. "Offensively, our spacing wasn't correct in the first half, and after we made some changes, we were able to get to the bucket and score some points."

Kayla Butler-Paulson led all scorers with 13 points, while fellow Argyle teammate Kylie Johnsen added 11 points.

Brodhead 67, Evansville 34

BRODHEAD - With a convincing 67-34 victory over Evansville on Thursday night, the Brodhead girls basketball team was able to clinch at least a share of their fourth straight Rock Valley South conference title.

Of course, capturing conference titles can be easy as long as a team is able to consistently win, which is why the Cardinals (18-0, 13-0) are tabbed as one of Division 3's elite squads.

Carly Mohns led all scorers with 23 points, while teammates Rachel Heller and Kylie Moe added 14 and 11 points respectively.

Brodhead takes on Palmyra-Eagle on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
