Monroe girls win invitational

DARLINGTON - Monroe High School girls track coach Matt Davis wanted to simulate the postseason, and he was excited with the results after the Cheesemakers ran to the championship of the Redbird Invitational on Monday.

The Monroe girls racked up 157 points to win the 10-team meet. Darlington (137.5) took second. Albany finished fourth (96), Pecatonica-Argyle took fifth (38) and Black Hawk was ninth (20).

After a meet last Friday, Davis wanted to see how the Cheesemakers would run in a short turnaround with another meet Monday.

"I designed it with the intention to win it," Davis said. "We had girls run multiple events, and I wanted them to get out and run. It was a meet to try to simulate the end of the year."

Monroe senior Josie Eberle won the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, and she was on two of the Cheesemakers' three winning relays.

Monroe sophomore Cammi Ganshert won the 100-meter dash in 13.19 seconds.

Monroe senior Jordan Hirsbrunner won the 800 in 2 minutes, 19.45 seconds - just ahead of Albany senior Ciara Kaderly who took second (2:25.55) - and was second in the long jump (16-21⁄2).

The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Eberle, junior Sydney Mathiason, senior Casey Rielly and Ganshert won (52.1). Eberle teamed with Rielly, freshman Cassi Gersbach and Ganshert to win the 800 relay (1:51.51).

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of senior Allyce Fahrney, sophomore Elise Smith, Mathiason and junior Rachel Meier won the race (10:43.46).

"All of our relays were competitive," Davis said. "I'm really happy with how the girls performed. It shows a little bit of our depth."

Pecatonica-Argyle senior Liz Tisch won the 400 (1:03.30), just ahead of Black Hawk junior Haley Gertsch who took second (1:05.27). In the 1,600, Albany junior Emma Guenther ran to the title (5:53.42). Darlington sophomore Ilse Mendez placed second (5:56.96).

Darlington junior Emma Crist won the 3,200 (13:12.45) ahead of Monroe sophomore Natalie Faith, who took second (14:15.30).

Rielly added a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles (16.48). Gersbach finished second in the 300 hurdles (48.94) and senior Lexus Trickel took second in the triple jump (32-5).

The Redbirds' 1,600 relay team of senior Sadie Fitzsimons, freshman Lizzie Schwartz, senior Paige Schilling and sophomore Kathleen Mathias won (4:19.05). The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Eberle, Gersbach, Mathiason and Meier placed second (45:20.08).

Darlington's Taryn Rankin, Kaitlyn Reichling, Isabel Wedig and Kennedy Rankin won the throwers 400 relay (1:01.88). Kennedy Rankin also won the discus (114-5). Darlington junior Hunter Weber finished second in the pole vault (9-0).

Albany's Kaitlyn Trow took second in the 200 (28.70). Pecatonica-Argyle junior Taetum Pagel placed second in the high jump (4-6). Albany sophomore Libby Beck finished second in the shot put (35-11⁄2).

For the boys at the Redbird Invitational, Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg rolled to the team title 188-132 over Darlington. The Cheesemakers took third (123) followed by Albany in fourth (90). Pecatonica-Argyle finished seventh (34) and Black Hawk was last (5).

Monroe sophomore Jordan Montgomery won the 100 (11.75) and the 200 (23.76). Monroe junior Jonah Tostrud won the 800 (2:03.42), which was ahead of Darlington junior Tanner Evenstad who took second (2:07.24).

Darlington senior Conner Hackett won the 1,600 (4:39.19) and junior Paul King won the 3,200 (10:40.59).

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of senior Parker Ingold, sophomore Kyle Legler, junior Dylan Scace and senior Josh Smith won the race (8:42.68).

The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of junior Brayden Zettle, junior Jason Koller, junior Jevon Gibson and Montgomery won (1:34.88). Zettle also won the triple jump (42-7 1⁄2).

Albany's 400 relay team of Hunter Overland, Evan Blumer, Logan Ross and Noah Pagel won (52.69).

Darlington junior Curtis Blosch won the pole vault (11-0). Scace finished second in the 400 (53.59).

Albany's Garrett Hlavachek took second in the 200 (24.08).

Darlington senior Mitchell Wagner took second in the 110 hurdles (17.13). The Redbirds' 400 relay team placed second (46.61) and the 800 relay (1:35.59), 1,600 relay (3:35.67) and 3,200 (8:51.08) also took second.
