EDGERTON - Both the Monroe boys and girls track teams ran to third-place finishes at the Edgerton Invitational on Friday.

The Monroe boys track team captured five first-place medals. Lodi won the 11-team meet ahead of Jefferson and the Cheesemakers.

"I told the guys we were using this meet to prepare for the conference meet," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "This was a little bit of a test run for us. We performed really well."

The Cheesemakers' 3,200-meter relay team of sophomores Dylan Scace, Jason Koller, Jonah Tostrud and senior Thang Lu won the relay with a time of 8 minutes, 12 seconds to set a meet record.

"Their goal was to set a meet record," Mosher said. "They ran by themselves most of the race. They have some big goals the rest of the season."

Lu won the 400 with a time of 51.4 seconds. Mosher said Lu may have to choose whether he wants to run the 400 or 800 in the regional meet at the end of the season.

"If he gets down in the 49-second range, he would have to consider running the 400," Mosher said. "He is so versatile and can do so many events. You are only limited to so many events."

Monroe junior Jake Kind finished first in the long jump with a jump of 19-9. It marked Kind's third meet competing in the long jump and he's won the event twice.

"He's been impressive," Mosher said. "He's a very good athlete."

Monroe senior Mitch Keith won the pole vault with a vault of 12-6.

"He (Keith) has had a great vaulting season," Mosher said. "He will be over 13-0 soon."

Monroe sophomore Brayden Zettle won the triple jump with a jump of 41 feet, 11 1⁄2 inches. It marks the third longest jump by a sophomore in the history of the boys track program. "It was a convincing win for him," Mosher said. "He has been working really hard. He keeps climbing the record book."

Freshman teammate Jordan Montgomery took third in the 100 (11.9) and Drake Ingold finished third in the 3,200 with a personal-best time of 10:13.

In the girls' meet, Jefferson ran away with the team title 150-118 over Mount Horeb. Monroe took third with 98 points. Monroe took fourth at the same meet last year.

"It's always nice to do better than last year," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "The team I saw perform was much better than last year. It really was a team effort. There were more people stepping up and scoring points."

Monroe junior Jordan Hirsbrunner won the 300 hurdles with a PR of 45.25 seconds. With the win, she defeated defending Division 2 state champion Mikaela Grant of Jefferson who had not lost a 300 hurdles race in two years.

"That was cool to see Jordan take down a high caliber athlete," Davis said. "Jordan is on fire in the 300 hurdles right now. She felt some pressure and responded well. It's nice to see what an athlete can do under pressure."

Monroe junior Josie Eberle teamed with senior Isabel Bazley, senior Abby Oudinot and freshman Cammi Ganshert to win the 400 relay with a time of 50.12 seconds. The same quartet won the 800 relay (1:49).

Hirsbrunner finished second in the high jump clearing 5-2 and freshman Faith Koester took fourth in the high jump (4-8). Oudinot finished second in the triple jump (33-7 1/2) and junior Alicia Kuester was fifth.

Pecatonica-Argyle junior Josie Penniston won the 400 (59.34) and took third in the 200 (26.71).

Eberle took third in the pole vault (8-6) and Monroe sophomore Mya Waterman was fourth in the 400 (1:02.67). Hirsbrunner finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.63).

Davis is confident in both the 400 and 800 relays.

"We loaded up two relays and we won both of them," he said. "It was a dominating performance in the 400 relay. They are the team to beat now."
