Sugar River Wrestling topples Beloit Turner

BELLEVILLE — Sugar River Wrestling hosted Beloit Turner in a dual on Tuesday, Dec. 6 with the Raiders coming out on top 41-22.

Garrett Pauli (220) opened the meet with a 13-1 major decision over Kyle Larson. Turner took a 6-4 lead with Anthony Hamilton’s (285) pin of Isaac Erb. Sugar River regained its lead, as Steven Grunnet (106) won by technical fall over Bailynn Dunham. From there on, the Raiders never trailed.

Both teams forfeited at 113.

Blake Endres (120) kept the momentum going with a 14-2 major decision over Brayden Ward. Ashlin Mihlbauer (126) added three more points with an 8-1 decision over Sidney Andrews. Mason Mau (132) recorded Sugar River’s third major decision. He defeated Zack Ries 14-2.

Turner scored in back-to-back matches with Justin Teague’s (138) 14-0 major decision over Brennan Keyes and Nat Pozzani’s (145) pin of Cayson Helwig. 

Trei Udelhoven (152) turned it around for the Raiders with his pin of Elijah Dever. The match didn’t even go into the second period, as Udelhoven bested Dever in 1:45. Eli Leonard (160) recorded a 17-2 technical fall over Carlos Ramirez, the second for the Raiders. Ryker Swenson (170) added four points to Sugar River’s total with his 11-3 major decision over Eric Halon.

Kooper Huffman (182) was the final scorer for Turner, as he pinned Alex Zielinski in 3:16.

Carson Loshaw (195) capped the night with a pin of Hunter Griinke.

Although the Trojans had one more pin than the Raiders (3-2), Sugar River bested Turner in every other category: decisions (1-0), major decision (4-1) and technical falls (2-0).

Sugar River hosts the Raider Scramble on Saturday, Dec. 10. Eight other teams will be participating: Brodhead-Juda, Deerfield, Dodgeville, Evansville, Monroe, Reserves and the Lincoln Academy.

Evansville is slated to bring the most wrestlers with 28, while Deerfield is scheduled to bring 20. Monroe will be the smallest team with just 11.

There will be 14 different weight classes. The 170-pound weight class is the largest with 11 wrestlers. The format will be a five-man round robin. The smallest brackets are 132 pounds and 145 pounds, which have eight wrestlers. Those formats will also be a five-man round robin.
