Laurence L. “Larry” Leverton

Laurence L. “Larry” Leverton, age 94, of Monroe, died on Friday, April 3, 2026 at SSM Monroe Hospice Home. Larry was born on July 18, 1931 in rural Orangeville, IL, the son of John and Gertrude (Wagner) Leverton. He was a graduate of Orangeville High School and served in the U.S. Army. Larry was united in marriage to Belva Hauser on June 8, 1952 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Monroe. He was employed as a service manager at Gempler’s Tire, Marty- Ripp Chevrolet, and Trucks Incorporated. He was a well- known bus driver for the Monroe School District for the past 68 years.

Larry was a member of the Monroe Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, enjoyed camping with his family, dancing with Belva, and kept sharp by doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles. In his spare time he could be found cutting wood, riding his motorcycle, tinkering with small engines, and attending family events. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humor.

Larry is survived by his five children, Deborah (Bob) Carpenter of Monroe, Cindy (John) Thompson of Juda, Ann (David) Siegel, Cheryl (Ernie) Jones, Kevin Leverton, all of Monroe; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; brothers, Virgil Leverton of Madison, Duaine Leverton of Orangeville; sister, JoAnn (Gene) Dobbins of Monroe; and a spoiled brat, his dog Riely. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Belva, on Feb. 20, 2024; great-grandson, Blake Carpenter; brothers, Leland and Allan Leverton; and his dog, Jax.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Kingdom Hall, N3073 State Road 59, Monroe. A luncheon will be held following the service at the Monroe American Legion Post #84. Visitation will precede the service on May 2, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family. Condolences may be shared at www.newcomerfuneralhome.net
