Eagles fly past Cheesemakers 7-0

MONROE — The Jefferson Eagles scored two goals in the first half and put up five scores in the second half to defeat the Monroe Cheesemakers 7-0 in Rock Valley Conference soccer on Thursday, April 16.

Recent heavy rain made the grass at Holyoke Pitch thick and tall, making play sluggish and ball movement slow-developing. Despite the best efforts of players like senior Mary McKenzie, junior Althea Eckdhal, junior Robin Jordan, senior Mara Dickson, and senior Maria Garcia, the Cheesemakers were unable to get an offensive threat going.

“We’re still trying to work out the pieces of playing in a game. We’re taking some small steps forward, but we still got a lot of room to work and get better,” said Monroe coach Samantha Rudi. “We need to create more space, and that comes with more experience. Right now, we’re trying to teach the girls how to use the entire field.”

Senior Kennedy Voegeli played the first 40 minutes at goalkeeper and had eight saves. Senior Layla Fry spent the second 40 minutes at goalkeeper and had three saves.

Monroe (0-2, 0-1) had a Rock Valley conference match scheduled on Monday, April 20 at Delavan-Darien before hosting Clinton/Turner at home on Thursday, April 23.
