Defense drives Argyle-Pecatonica

BENTON — Second-ranked Argyle-Pecatonica stomped the Zephyrs in a Six Rivers crossover game Jan. 15, 71-43. The Orioles led 43-20 at halftime and forced 40 turnovers on 30 steals in the contest.

Kylie Butler scored 32 points to lead the way for Argyle-Pecatonica (16-1, 4-0 Six Rivers East). Brooke Wellnitz tallied 18 points and eight steals, and Loretta Tisch added 10 points.

Benton (4-10) was led in scoring by Jasmine Cummins (12).

Albany-Monticello 66, Shullsburg 43

SHULLSBURG — Alana Durtschi tallied 23 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals, and teammate Dalana Trumpy added 18 points and four steals as the Comets (13-2, 2-1) rolled the Miners (4-10) on Jan. 15.

Albany-Monticello, which led 31-18 at halftime, had 15 steals and finished an efficient 11-for-24 (45.8%) from 3-point range. 

Black Hawk 65, Juda 29

JUDA — The Warriors pounced on the Panthers early en route to a blowout Six Rivers East win Jan. 15.

Black Hawk went up 42-19 at halftime, then outscored Juda by 13 in the second half with the reserves in. Maddy Place led the Warriors with 14 points, Kendra Haldiman 12, Hailey Wellnitz 10 and Maddy Lange eight. Haldiman and Mya Milz each had six steals. As a team, the Warriors had 22 steals.

Lavinia Rufer had nine points and 12 rebounds for Juda, while Rianna Sullivan finished with seven points and seven boards. The Panthers committed 35 turnovers and were 0-for-15 from 3-point range.

Mineral Point 50, Darlington 34

MINERAL POINT — The Pointers pulled away in the second half after building a 10-point lead at the midway point of their SWAL game Jan. 15. In fact, Mineral Point led by 14 during the opening period. After that point, the Redbirds never brought the deficit back to within single digits.

Neither team shot well from the field: Mineral Point shot 24.6% from the field and 15% from beyond the arc (3-for-20). Darlington was 23.3% from the field, and 25% from deep (3-for-15). However, Mineral Point got the job done in the paint and at the free-throw line. The Pointers grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, scoring 12 second chance points.

Sadie Goebel led Darlington in scoring with eight points and teammate Aubrey McCarthy had 10 rebounds. Ella Kroll scored 14 to pace Mineral Point, which got 15 rebounds from Blair Watters.

Darlington 54, River Valley 29

DARLINGTON — A balanced attack saw nine different Redbirds score in a SWAL victory Jan. 16.

Aubrey McCarthy and Catie Hartwig each had 10 points to lead Darlington, while Maddie Gratz had nine and Sadie Goebel added eight. McCarthy added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Gratz and Goebel each had four steals. Jaidyn Evenstad dished out seven assists.

The Redbirds had 36 deflections, 20 steals and won the turnover battle 41-18. Despite shooting just 3-for-19 (15.8%) from behind the 3-point line and 9-for-24 (37.5%) from the stripe, Darlington out-paced River Valley 17-2 in transition points.

Fort Atkinson 65, Monroe 35

MONROE — The Cheesemakers trailed the Blackhawks by just 10 points at halftime, but a brutal second half quickly turned the nonconference game into a route Jan. 15.

Ashlie Riley was one of four Fort Atkinson players in double figures. The Blackhawks stole the ball 17 times in the game and blocked six shots – five of which were by Riley. Monroe had 31 turnovers and shot just 26.7% from the field.

Alexis Gertsch led Monroe with 14 points, while Lindsay Leuzinger scored six points.
