Darlington escapes Mineral Point in OT

DARLINGTON — It took extra time to determine the winner in a SWAL Conference matchup on Thursday, Jan. 12, but the Redbirds prevailed 73-70 over the Pointers. With the win, Darlington stands alone atop the conference standings at 5-0, while Mineral Point drops a game back at 4-1. Cuba City is also 4-1.

Carver Fitzsimons led the way with a double-double, scoring a career-high 28 points with 13 rebounds. Will Murray also surpassed the 20-point mark with 21 points and eight rebounds. The next highest scorer was Brady Long with nine points.

Mineral Point shot 50% from beyond the arc, making 13 3-pointers compared to Darlington’s three. The Redbirds had the edge in overall field goal percentage (45%-38%) and rebounds (41-33), though.


PECATONICA 78, JUDA 25

JUDA — With Argyle’s loss to Barneveld, the Vikings share second place in conference (4-1) with their win over the Panthers.

Pecatonica had a 33-point lead at half and never looked back. The Vikings limited the Panthers to just nine points in the second half, while scoring 29 of their own.

Evan Dochnal, who averaged 10.4 points in six games, broke out for 24 points to lead the Vikings. Jameson Johnson trailed with 19 points, and Coy Ruegsegger tallied 14 as the third Pecatonica player in double figures.


BELLEVILLE 58, NEW GLARUS 56

BELLEVILLE — With just 2.8 second left in the game, Nathan Meier grabbed an offensive board and put it back in to lift the Wildcats over the Knights on Thursday, Jan. 12. The basket was just one of Meier’s seven in the second half.

The duo of Ethan Friedrich and Brett Warrell led New Glarus’s offense, scoring 21 and 12 points, respectively. The two accounted for four of the Knight’s six 3-pointers. The remaining two came from Jake Roth and Breckyn Thompson.


NEW GLARUS 70, POYNETTE 65

POYNETTE — The Knights rebounded from a last-second loss to rival Belleville with a nonconference win on Saturday, Jan. 14. Trailing by one at half, New Glarus kicked it into gear in the second to get the win.

Four players scored in double figures, led by Max Parman with 16 points. He made two shots from beyond the arch.  Max Marty (10 points), Roth (three points), Friedrich (10 points) and AC Strok (15 points) had one 3-pointer each. At the line, the Knights shot 61% with significant contributions from Strok (6-for-8) and Jack Leonard (4-for-6).


BIG FOOT 72, BRODHEAD 50

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals trailed by just four at halftime, but the Chiefs pulled away as two players tallied 10 second-half points. 

Cullen Walker paced Brodhead with 18 points, going 4-for-5 from the line with two 3-pointers. After scoring 14 points in the first half, he was silenced in the second for just four, though. Jaxon Dooley and Brody Riese also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Nearly half of Dooley’s points came from the charity stripe. Nathan Engen put up eight points, while the remaining three came from a Sam Searls 3-pointer.


ALCS 76, MONTICELLO 31

MADISON — Jackson Eyler’s hot hand in the first grew cold in the second, as Abundant Life Christian School came out victorious in a nonconference game on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Eyler led the Ponies with 19 points, with 12 of them coming in the first half. Ryer Indergand tallied five points from two baskets and a free throw. Austin Skibbe added three. Eyler led on the boards, too, grabbing seven rebounds. Zuteus Blades trailed with three rebounds.

Conversely, the Challengers had three players in double figures, with Jimmitrius Davison recording a double-double (19 points, 15 rebounds).

In other local scores, Barneveld beat Argyle 69-25 and Palmyra-Eagle beat Juda 65-30.
