ALBANY — With his first-place finish in the boys’ race, Carter Scholey of Belleville advances to the WIAA Division III State meet on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Wisconsin Rapids. Last season, Scholey took eighth at State.
To qualify for the State meet, an individual must be on one of the top two teams of their respective sectional or finish in the top five — not including the winning teams.
In the boys’ race, Iowa-Grant took first with 59 points. Its top three runners — Mason Aide, Bret Connolly and Caden Pennekamp — finished in the top ten. Second-place Fennimore trailed by 47 points with a grand total of 106.
The top five individuals outside of these teams included Scholey (1st), Nick Stitzer of Riverdale (3rd), Kirk Caminiti of Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld (4th), Jaxon Hornby of Marshall (5th) and Tanis Crawford of Poynette (7th).
Host Albany missed out on State by 20 points. Its top five runners were Ethan Koss (18:12.6, 10th), Brayden Bakken (18:37.0, 14th), Kaleb Broughton (19:30.5, 29th), Gage Roth (20:00.8, 36th) and Brian Cid (20:02.6, 37th).
Darlington took seventh with 201 points. The Redbirds were led by George West who finished in the top ten (18:02.4, 9th). Pecatonica/Argyle, which took 12th with 295 points, was led by Ridge Toay (18:52.3, 17th).
On the girls’ end, defending State champion Boscobel ran away with the meet, scoring 52 points. Nora Jillson, who finished sixth at last year’s State meet, won the girls’ race (19:40.7). Lancaster — which took sixth in the 2021 State meet — took second with 78 points.
The top-five individuals include Ella Whiffen of Madison Country Day (20:04.3, 2nd), Agnes Carstens of North Crawford (20:31.4, 3rd), Hannah Hallick of Madison Country Day (20:40.9, 4th) and Hope Connolly of Iowa-Grant (20:57.4, 5th).

Darlington trailed behind the Comets in fifth with 142 points. The Redbirds faced some adversity, as their top runner Adalee Berget nursed an injury. She still led the team with her time of 23.32.6.
Pecatonica/Argyle scored 212 points for eighth. Loretta Tisch was the top runner with a time of 22.33.2 (15th).
