EVANSVILLE — The Cheesemakers are sending three wrestlers to WIAA Division 2 sectional meet in Richland Center — while Brodhead-Juda will send three and Sugar River two.

“The day went as I expected,” Monroe coach Tom Witt said. The Cheesemakers had three athletes injured and competed at the Evansville regional with just six wrestlers.

Advancing for Monroe are sophomore Jack Dubach at 113 pounds, junior Brady Schuh at 136 and sophomore Isaac Bunker at 285. Schuh was a state qualifier last year.

“Most goals of all wrestlers is to get to this position — be in a position to qualify for the Individual State Wrestling Tournament,” Witt said. “All three wrestlers have an opportunity to attain this goal come Saturday. They have show up and wrestle their best, there will be no margin for error. This year only the top two will advance normally it is the top three finishers.”

Dubach (9-0) was the top seed in his bracket and dominated, pinning both opponents in less than 3 minutes of mat time. Brady Schuh (9-0) also dominated, pinning both of his opponents in about 8 minutes of mat time.

Bunker (6-3) is in his first year of varsity and also had a bye in the opening round of the regional. He pinned his semifinal opponent in just 14 seconds. In the championship match against Waylon Klitzman of Evansville, Bunker had the score knotted up at 4-4 before making a mistake, which led to a pin.

“Anthony has just had a tough two years for his high school years so far. Last year he broke his wrist in the first week of practice and missed the whole season. This year, to no fault of his own, he was made to quarantine for two weeks and could not compete or practice,” Witt said. “He has worked really hard when he has been with us.”

“In the finals put himself in bad position succumbing to the weight of the Evansville opponent,” Witt said. “Isaac is figuring out who he is as a wrestler and how to handle the bigger opponents that he faces.”

Also wrestling for Monroe were CJ Schuh (5-3) at 126, Anthony Wels (2-5) at 132, and Ryan Holst (0-7) at 160.

“Being a freshman CJ has good things to look forward to,” Witt said. “Ryan has done a great job for us. (He) works hard every day in practice and always gives his best effort. The record does not show it but Ryan shown a lot of improvement this year.”

With Wels, Witt said there has been a lot of outside forces involved, but that better days are ahead.

Brady Schuh

Moving on for Brodhead-Juda are Marcus McIntyre (8-0) at 132, Cole Hoesly (7-0) at 182 and CJ Streuly (4-1) at 195.

Three other Cardinals finished in third place, with the most devasting loss of all going to Seth Mansfield (4-6), who fell by a 3-2 decision in the wrestleback to Whitewater’s Marcus Deporter (7-4). Mansfield reached the wrestleback with a sudden victory overtime win against Sugar River’s Avery Lettman in the third-place match.

Jacob Lohmar (3-4) was third at 106, and Emmitt Allen (3-6) took third at 220.

McIntyre pinned his quarterfinal opponent in 52 seconds, then defeated Justin Teague of Beloit Turner 8-1 in the semifinal. In the championship round, McIntyre pinned Sugar River senior Joe Quaglia, a multi-time state qualifier.

“(Quaglia) was controlling the match and was up 3-0, but made one mistake and got caught in a headlock,” Sugar River coach Peter Swenson said. “

At 182, Hoesly pinned both of his opponents in the second period. Streuly won his semifinal match by a 9-6 decision, then was pinned in the finals in just 39 seconds by Evansville’s Collin Roberts. In the wrestleback, Streuly pinned Edgerton’s David Wienke in the second period.

For Sugar River, Swenson said the goal was to get every wrestler in the top-4, and five of his seven competitors did just that.

“I thought everyone fought really hard through the day,” Swenson said.

Advancing to sectionals for the Raiders are Mason Mau (9-0), who took first place at 120 by pinning both of his opponents, and Quaglia (8-1), who was second at 132.

“Mason at 120 looked dominant. He has high goals for high school and is a really hard-working kid. I know he’s looking to get to state this season,” Swenson said. “Joe had a good day, despite getting pinned in the finals. I believe that will be great motivation for him this week through practice and next Saturday.”

Carson Lowshaw (6-3) was third at 160, while fourth-place finishers included Lettman (4-4, 145) and Alex Zielinski (7-2, 160).

“Our other wrestlers got some great experience. Freshmen Alex Zielinkski, Carson Loshaw, and Jacob Walker (5th place, 285) gained valuable experience. Juniors Avery Lettman and Matthew Loshaw continue to get better each time they step out on the mat. They will be our team leader’s next season and will lead our young team coming back,” Swenson said.
