MONROE - Tennis coach Brad Saugstad had concerns the Monroe girls tennis team may get off to a slow start since they haven't played a match in one week.
Saugstad's fears came to fruition as the Cheesemakers lost a Badger South Conference match to Milton 5-2 on Tuesday.
"We were really rusty early on," Saugstad said. "We haven't practiced since Wednesday, and we had a short practice and it showed. We got better in the second and third sets. It was definitely a goal to get back in the swing of things. I was hoping we could get some doubles wins and be competitive in singles."
The two wins for the Cheesemakers came from the No. 1 and 3 doubles teams. The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of juniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire defeated the Red Hawks' Maddie Erdman and Zyann Furseth 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-2.
"The weather has been a problem," Grossen said. "We have to get back in the groove and we will be just fine. We were a little rusty. We always start out slow and then get going."
McGuire said the duo always concentrates at getting to the net, being aggressive and putting the ball away.
Monroe sophomores Erin Gellings and Paige Prien defeated Abby Simes and Sydney Schoebele 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Red Hawks, which have eight returning players from last year and an exchange student Lea Krajcovicova, swept all four singles matches.
Krajcovicova defeated Macayla Quinn at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Milton's Elizabeth Murphy defeated Alisa Fager 6-0, 6-1. Milton's Hannah Simes at No. 3 singles beat Sarah Wong 6-1, 6-2 and Jamie Sommer at No. 4 singles defeated Monroe's Sarah Sabatke 6-4, 6-1.
Milton's Nina Mendoza and Bailee Priewe defeated Monroe's Allie Coplien and Chelsea Miller 6-3, 7-6 (3).
