Gorr in hunt for title

LA CROSSE - Monroe senior Traiten Gorr is still alive to win a championship at 220 pounds at the 34th annual Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center.

Gorr (21-0) won four matches Tuesday, the first day of the 46-team tournament.

Gorr defeated Ellsworth's Jacob Kinneman 7-0 and then pinned Ithaca-Weston's Kyler Koch in 1 minute, 11 seconds. He then pinned Holmen freshman Jesse Fiers in 4:56. In the quarterfinals, Gorr edged Caledonia-Houston's senior Eli Craig 5-3.

Monroe sophomore Dempzy Foley (160), junior Hayden Arneson (195) and junior Kyle Walter (heavyweight) each went 3-1 on the first day and are still alive for medals.

Foley received a first-round bye and then pinned Middleton's Dion Huff in 3:07. South Saint Paul's Ryan Duffy then pinned Foley. Foley bounced back by pinning Mount Horeb's Aquoya Faust in 3:32.

Arneson pinned La Crosse Logan's Collin Mastin in 49 seconds. He then pinned Luxemburg-Casco's Jordan Tlachac in 3:38. He defeated Prairie du Chien-Wauzeka Steuben's Peyton Hall 8-4. Arneson lost his first match in the quarterfinals when Riverdale's Trevor Troxel pinned him in 1:53.

Walter at heavyweight went 3-1 on Tuesday. Walter defeated Middleton's Saul Carranza 3-0 and defeated Stillwater's Chris Bradley 3-2 in overtime. Dodgeville's Payton Calvert then pinned him in 1:19. In a consolation wrestleback match, Walter edged Riverdale's Garret Wilmot 1-0.

Monroe's David Andrews (120) went 3-2, and the Cheesemakers had five wrestlers who finished 2-2 the first day - freshman Gabe Witt (106), junior Cole Murray (132), sophomore Sam Kind (138), senior Ian Salzwedel (152) and junior Isaac Allen (182).
