Glarner Knights prepare for 'next step'

NEW GLARUS - Ken Zimmerman says the New Glarus boys golf team has the talent and experience needed to make a move up the Capitol Conference standings this spring.

"Now it's just a matter of taking that next step," he said.

Zimmerman and co-coach Craig Hodgson welcome back a veteran team that includes two of the Glarner Knights' top performers from 2011 and four

letterwinners total.

Seniors Eric Anderson and Lucas Lagen, both third-year varsity players, join junior returnees Dallas Andersen and Evan Rife to give New Glarus one of the more experienced lineups in the Capitol.

Zimmerman likes what he's seen in the practices leading up to the Glarner Knights' season-opening meet on Tuesday at Watertown Luther Prep.

"Between the four of them, they've had enough varsity golf experience that they shouldn't be nervous or anything," Zimmerman said. "It's just a matter now of taking it down just a couple of shots from their averages last year. If we get everybody to drop two shots, I think we at least can be in the top four (in the Capitol Conference), if not in the hunt for the championship."

Anderson averaged around 43 for nine holes last season to lead New Glarus in stroke average, and he finished in the top 10 at the eight-team Capitol Conference championship, Zimmerman said.

"He had a pretty solid year," Zimmerman said. "Eric is fairly long (off the tee) and he's fairly accurate with his irons."

Lagen finished strong last season, advancing to sectionals as an individual en route to compiling an average of 44.

"That was good experience for Lucas," Zimmerman said. "The biggest thing for (Anderson and Lagen) is they have the physical talent to shoot around 80 - it's just sometimes the mental game needs to be worked on a little bit more."

Zimmerman said Andersen and Rife averaged 45 and 46, respectively, last season.

"Dallas isn't the longest person in the world, but he has a fairly good short game," Zimmerman said. "He works hard at the game. His accuracy with his irons is what will take him to the next level.

"Evan came on pretty strong last year. He does everything well, it's just a matter of tightening everything up to shave a few strokes off his scores."

Two seniors, Dylan Wolber and Ryan Zimmerman, are battling for the final spot in the Glarner Knights' lineup.

Ken Zimmerman said Columbus, which finished third in the eight-team Capitol a year ago, has some strong golfers returning and will likely be the team to beat this spring.

The Glarner Knights again will host a Division 3 sectional tournament on May 29 at Edelweiss Country Club.
