BEAVER DAM - Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of senior Patrick Gellings and Garrett Tschanz won the championship at their flight at the Beaver Dam Invitational Saturday.

Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said Tschanz and Gellings were the highlight of the meet.

Gellings and Tschanz beat Stevens Point's Cody Crunkilton and Tyler Hansen 7-6 (5) 6-1 in the championship match.

In the first round, the pair defeated Plymouth's Bobby Paese and Ian Jasso 6-3, 6-3. Next, they earned a chance to play for the title after defeating Madison La Follete's Jake Amend and Steve Amend 6-0, 6-4.

"They played smart doubles," Saugstad said. "They hit a lot of first serves in and got a lot of serve returns back. They moved up to the net and put the ball away. I can't say enough positive things about how Pat and Garrett played this weekend."

Monroe finished fifth out of eight teams, while Stevens Point won the title.

"We got to see some really good competition this weekend," Saugstad said. "Stevens Point had four very talented singles players and three nice doubles teams. Unfortunately, we had two first-round matches with Stevens Point in singles, and we ran into them in two semifinals in singles too."

The Cheesemakers had two other singles players who placed - Eric Knudtson and Jess Hager. Knudtson at No. 3 singles took third place. He beat Madison La Follette's Noah Lawrence-Holder 6-1, 6-1, then ran into a tough Stevens Point player, Michael Chang, and lost 6-1, 6-0. He bounced back and beat a Beaver Dam's Mitch Lehner in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.

Hager, at No. 4 singles, took fourth place. He beat Madison La Follette's Logan Ladd-Hull 6-0, 6-0. He then lost to Stevens Point's Chris Clark 6-0, 6-1. Hager then lost to Plymouth's Aaron Cantleberry 6-1, 6-4.

Carson Root at No. 1 singles lost to Stevens Point's Chalee Sciprasert 6-0, 6-3 and then lost to Waunakee's Gabe Stauffacher 6-2, 4-6, 10-2. It's the second time this year that Root has lost a three-set match to Stauffacher.

Freshman Taylor Soddy, at No. 2 singles, lost to Aaron Pavelski of Stevens Point 6-3, 6-2 and then lost to Waunakee's Aaron Stoltenberg 6-3, 6-4.

The Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of Jakob Baertschi and Cristian Noriega lost to Waunakee's Justin Reisdorf and Brady Payne 7-6 (4), 6-1. Then, lost to BJ Sherry and Brian Chorski of La Crosse Central 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.

At No. 3 doubles, Monroe's Luke Molinaro and Luke Andraski lost to Madison La Follette's Ross Shillinglaw and Dalton Weum 6-4, 6-2. The pair then lost to Pat Feldman and Nick Eggert of Plymouth, 6-1, 7-6.
