MADISON - The Monroe High School boys golf team played a dual match against Madison Edgewood in the rain Tuesday, and the Crusaders were able to weather the storm for a 21-stroke victory, 149-170.

Madison Edgewood's Ben Gilles shot a 1-over-par 35 at Nakoma Country Club to win medalist honors.

"I'm surprised with the conditions they shot really well," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "It's not that we shot horribly for the conditions. They just shot really well."

Monroe junior Nick Baumann and sophomore Collyn Wilde led the Cheesemakers, each shooting a 41. Monroe junior Devon Boeck carded a 43. Senior Tanner Thompson rounded out the top four for the Cheesemakers with a 45.

Monroe drops to 1-4 in Badger South dual matches. The Cheesemakers will host Oregon in a conference match Friday at Monroe Country Club.

After the match against Oregon, Monroe will play in the Madison Memorial Invitational May 17 and then in the Badger Conference tournament May 18 at the Springs Golf Course in Spring Green. The Cheesemakers will be looking for a third straight sectional trip as a team when they play May 25 in the WIAA Division 2 regional at Nakoma Country Club.

"We haven't been playing our best," Rindy said. "We are in a little slump. We are still confident we can get out of the regional and make a run back to the sectional."
