MONROE - The Cheesemaker boys tennis team had a break from dual matches and a tune-up for doubles teams with the Monroe Doubles Invitational on Saturday.
Monroe had several doubles flights get into third-place matches, but the Cheesemakers finished last in the invite. McFarland won the doubles title over Baraboo and Fort Atkinson, which tied for second.
"We had a few byes in the first round which allowed some of them to play for third place," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get a win anywhere in the brackets.
"The goal of the doubles invite was to get a great competitive weekend of strong doubles play. This tournament helps us get into the conference mindset that there will be multiple matches played each day."
Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of senior Tanner Purdy and junior Kody Althaus lost two matches in the tournament. Baraboo's Jake Huffaker and Nic McReath defeated Purdy and Althaus 6-3, 6-4. McFarland's Rob Cook and Joe Heiser defeated Purdy and Althaus 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Monroe's Brett Lyne and Ben Dombkowski dropped two matches. Fort Atkinson's Matt Tesch and Cole Bramstadt knocked off Lyne and Dombkowski 6-0, 6-0. Baraboo's No. 2 doubles team of Kenny Armstrong and Nick brooks beat Lyne and Dombkowski 6-0, 6-0.
McFarland's Cadern Consolatti and Ryan Melstrom at No. 3 doubles defeated Monroe's Zeke Frankford and Andrew Johnson 6-2, 6-0. Whitewater's Justin Brantmeier and Michael Fernandez beat Frankford and Johnson 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4 doubles, McFarland's Taylor Marshall and Noah Fischer defeated the Cheesemakers' Ryan Stoneback and Quinn Sulejmani 6-1, 6-1.
Monona Grove's Max Nelson and Cole Lindwall at No. 1 A doubles beat Monroe juniors Ryan Peterson and Silas Setterstrom 6-1, 6-4. Peterson and Setterstrom then lost a second match to Fort Atkinson's Tanner Bakken and Collin Baker in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Monroe will host Portage today and will host Madison Edgewood on Tuesday. The Cheesemakers will play in the Badger Conference tournament on Friday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
"I would like to see everyone be more aggressive on the court," Hermanson said. "Now is the time to lay everything on the court because the next tournaments are single elimination and I would like to see some people move on."
Hermanson wants to see the Cheesemakers build momentum for conference with matches against Potage and Edgewood.
"I am hoping for a competitive match against Portage and hopefully get a few wins on the day," Hermanson said. "For Edgewood, I'm hoping to get a few games from them since they are sitting at the top of the conference."
